Mariam’s work is intended to figuratively express the effects of body shaming that are otherwise invisible to bystanders. Cotton candy stands are a source of joy and sugar rushes, tempting to all ages, but especially to children. A ghee stand represents the utter opposite; the robbing of joy, innocence, and childhood all in itself by the seemingly innocuous comments and snide remarks about one’s body and weight. The suffocated, isolated, and dripping bags of ghee denote the struggles of an impressionable young mind at the hands of those closest to them.
